Insight-live to the rescue.

Our nearest distributor of glaze supplies is almost a four hour round trip over the coastal range and south to the 'big city'. You can understand my dismay when I realized I had forgotten my shopping list just as I stepped into the store. I was on a mission to fill out our ingredient base so we could make many of the glazes we have read about. The shopping list was developed by studying the glaze data base for this group on Insight-live. Luckily I had my ipad with me and was able to log in…

Never program a kiln when you are sick!

I am home with a touch of the flu. I decided to re-fire a couple of iron reds and change the hold to 950c. I just went out to check the progress and saw that it was below 950c and hadn't done the hold. Upon reviewing(again), I saw that I had programmed 95c instead of 950c. Thanks heavens I always monitor! I hit stop and re-programmed a ramp to 950c with a 60 min hold. 9 hours of wasted element wear avoided! Jeff

FUN WITH FUNGI AT THE BLUEDOOR STUDIO

Winter has arrived in all its icy glory here in Lenswood and the last couple of weeks has seen a proliferation of all things Fungal around the Adelaide Hills. Very distracting I must say as I've been out taking photos... alot!!!

However I have found it very…

I think I am going crazy!!!

A while back somebody posted a photo of a pot with a white matt glaze with a light green glaze over it  The white matt had rutile in it & was very nice layered under other glazes.  Several of us asked about the recipe.  It was given  I mixed up a 100 gram test batch & did several tests under a lot of different glazes, most of which came out very nice.  It is time to mix up a larger batch & I cannot find the recipe, nor can I find it here on the forum, not even the picture!!  I…

History

Our move into this wonderful building is going very well. The first batch of test glaze from our new mixing room is up on the floor, soon to be in the next kiln load.

Tonight I'm downstairs cleaning kiln shelves.. thinking of everything these 100+ old walls must have seen. I'm not one to believe in ghosts, but you can't help but feel the years here. It is very special.

Campfire Pots

I've been teaching kids summer camp for the last 5 years. Last year we made barrel fired pots, this year we're working "from the ground up."

Harvesting clay, screening and drying, making pots, and firing in a bon fire. No kiln.

In an attempt to stave off exploded pots and crying children, I've been working to increase my odds of success.

I have found Ohio clay right from the ground to be sandy and somewhat short, but workable nonetheless. It's easy to pinch, and actually…

The History of the Tie

I served as a pall bearer at a friend's funeral this weekend and for the first time in a decade or more, I wore a tie.  During the downtime of the funeral I found my mind wondering about the history of the tie.  How it came about.  When was the first instance of ties being common, etc.

When I got home I decided to do some research to satisfy my curiosity and came upon this interesting connection between ties and clay.  The first example in history of ties being commonly worn by…

Photos ~ Finished Pieces

As of this posting (5/6/12), there are only 11 pieces. When I say I'm a newbie, I'm not kidding! ~ Actually these start from when I decided to take pottery more serious.

Oil Spots

I am looking for firing regimes for oil spot glazes between 9 and 11.  Is it good to soak at top temp, or slow cool and for how long.  I have not found the solution yet.  My results are either craters, or overfired with smooth running glazes and no oilspots!  I am testing a variety of recipes out of Britt's "High Fire" Glazes.

I have a confession to make.

I enjoy the occasional cone 6 salt firing.  I also enjoy  raku and aluminum foil saggar.  I have not been able to find any twelve step program to help me with these addictions so I was wondering if it would be appropriate to post any photos of these works.  I like the fact that this site is so cone specific and really don't want to confuse people who may just be learning the specifics of firing temperatures.  Any comments?

Randy's Red = first try

Thanks Pamela, I found this RIO here on this site.  It's called Special Red Oxide from Ceramic Supply of New York and New Jersery.  I really think the wash after 3 coats is what made it bright.  Sells for $3.25 per pound.

Randy's Red = first try

First thank you George for the advice.  See the result.  Three heavy coats, 1 brushing of RIO (special) mixed with water and a slow cool firing.

I am one of a group called Claycrafters, Pointe Claire, Quebec. This session we will focus on cone 6 oxidation. I am going to be working on several ideas and the others will be doing similar things with the glazes they wish to develop. I will post our progress.

Anagama Kiln Firing at Hambidge

It's not ^6 electric but this past weekend I had the pleasure of being a part of firing the anagama kiln at Hambidge Center in North Georgia.  This firing was organized by Tom Egan and Rick Berman.  I had a great time meeting new people and listening to stories about pottery and life, we had a pot luck on Saturday night that was full of delicious food and I learned a lot.…
