I finally have the glazes mixed from the March workshop I took with SH.  I would like to fire SH glazes in the same kiln with MC6G that I have been using successfully.  The cooling rates are very different.  I used the scedule SH gave us and the MC^6 glazes came out glossy, where with Hessleberth's firing recommendations, they are nice matts and satins.  SH says if strontium glazes are cooled too slowly they are rough.

Anyone??

Hi June. I'm not Martha but I can answer about SCM W. The W is for Warm and produces a warmer recipe due to inclusion of RIO in the recipe. It also has other adjustments. I am on the road and don't have the recrecipe at hand. Maybe someone else can share.

Thanks John. I hope someone else will post the recipe if you don't.

I'm starting to weigh out some of those test glaze batches today, now that all the tiles are made and drying.

The recipe I use for warm colors is SCMO (SCM for Orange) and I got it from this page:

It's the same recipe as SCM plus 2% Yellow Iron Oxide. If there's a version with RIO that works better in oxidation, I'd be interested in hearing about it too.

Have you tried it with the 2% red iron oxide in oxidation? The intensity would be increased if you use a very high quality red iron oxide that is available through some suppliers, or just add a bit more of your regular iron oxide if it's not as intense as you would like. I doubt if you'd get orange in oxidation with only 2% red iron.

Some high purity red iron oxides have a 99% purity. Georgies in Portland has one that is high purity but they don't mention the percentage. Bailey's has one that is 93% purity. I don't know how those compare to Spanish red iron.

High alumina  matts with 8% rutile and 4% tin oxide will give a strong orange (I have a recipe and photo in one of my cone 6 test tile groups on my web page). Here's my recipe if you want to try it. I didn't fire it down, so I don't know what it will do, but it was very nice just tested in my small test kiln.

June Perry #7473 V3 color A. It is another calcium eutectic type glaze. It has a lovely surface and medium peach color, darker than the one next to it. Tile is porcelain.

Recipe:

25.23 Custer Feldspar

40.92 Wollastonite

20.28 EPK

4.13 Calcined Kaolin

0.18 Talc

9.27 Silica

Total 101

M colors ADD: Rutile 8%, Tin oxie 4%

This is a good matt, and I would imagine if you use the Steven Hill or similar firing cycles, it would work well, since the high calcium with that kind of firing schedule may benefit the crystal growth.

On my web site there are a few variations of this base glaze with lower amounts of rutile for peach tones.
