Hi,

My name is Maria and a somewhat amateur at pottery

This is my first post and I'm so glad to have found this forum!

I have a kiln and bought a potter's wheel of Shimpo RK-3E.

Watched a video on YouTube where the craftsman made ​​a slip. I was delighted.

He works on the wheel and with the raw clay begins to decorate with a liquid using Slip Trailer Applications.

Does someone could help me, informing the liquid that is used to decorate the raw clay is Engobes or underglaze?  

I want to buy the product and would like to really know right.

If Engobes, should I buy liquid or powder?

And Underglaze can use the raw clay?

Maria,

You can quickly make slip using using dried scrap of your clay body.

Just weigh the scrap then add it to water in an old blender. See attached.

You can make trailing slip or brushing slip, or dipping slip just by controlling the amount of water.

If you want colored slip you can buy Mason stain colors from any dealer.  If you clay body is white usually add color 10% by weight of your dry scrap will work .  Here is link to Mason colors.

You typically need to add about 2% to 10% color to a clay to color an englobe.

I've found that adding "Pat Horsely's Score No More" to your clay body helps the slip adhere.

Can you tell when I put water in engobe powder, I add water along with some substance to stick with engobe glazed effects?

If you actually purchased a dry pre-mixed englobe, such as this product:

You simply add water until it is like thick cream, as the product instructions say.

If you purchased a color to add to an englobe, you need to mix it with the clay you are using or an englobe recipe. This article contains a typical englobe recipe.

Can anyone tell me if when I put water in engobe powder, I add with the water some substance to stick with engobe glazed effects? glycerin, olive oil .... ?
I'll slide the engobe in various colors using the Slip Trailers.
I want the colors do not mix.

The pre-mix should have everything it needs, so just add water. You can add a thickener, a very plastic clay called bentonite, but your pre-mix should already have it included.

Just let each color of englobe dry fully before adding the next, and they won't mix.
