Hi- does anybody have Emmanuel Cooper's recipe "WSG31 Clear"? I read that this is recommended by the Mason Co. for mixing with their stains. Thanks. Joan C.

Hang in there Joan.

I'd like to see you get a response on this one.

Joan,

I could not get an email response from Mason Colors stain company so I called them.  They recommend the following formula for transparent large cone 6.

F-38 frit          32

Kona F-4 Spar  26

Silica              19

Whiting           13

EPK                10

The formula looks quite old.  F-38 is and odd frit by Fusion Co. that contains about 18% strontium carbonate.  The closest Ferro frit is 3292, but it only has 4% strontium.   I personally don't think that small amount of strontium is going to influence the colors very much.

For the other components of F-38 the Ferro frit 3124 is fairly close, but it does not contain strontium.  When I get around to testing this formula on stains I will use frit 3124 and for one batch add about 10% strontium carbonate to see if it indeed affects the colors significantly.

Wow! Thank you John! I'm not quite sure how to reply on this site- think I just managed to repost your post somehow. If you do get around to testing for colour response, please post pics of your results, and I will do likewise- Joan C.

Has anyone tried Emanuel Cooper's Shocking Pink at cone 6, or tried fluxing it down?

I understand he was well-known for developing this method of pink with barium, zinc and nickel.

40.0%   Barium Carbonate
35.0%   Potash feldspar
15.0%   Zinc oxide
5.0%   China Clay
5.0%   Silica
2.4%   Nickel Carbonate

Joan,

Your post made it OK.

I too find the site a bit hard too get used to.

I also posted your subject over on Clayarts Daily where there is a bit more traffic.

Norm,

That looks interesting, but I stay away from Barium because I want to get as many retirement checks as possible.

You can always replace Strontium Carbonate for Barium Carbonate without changing the color much.
