Accounting 101 - Class Logistics

  • Most of our time we will be working independently on our Tasks for the week. We will need to schedule 2 times a week where we all check progress of the group, and offer assistance on unanswered questions. It is not necessary that we all be online simultaneously at these two times, just that we check-in, comment, ask questions and try to provide answers to questions. I work days, so I will be available to look in on Monday and Thursday evenings around 7:30 pm Eastern Savings Time (US). If you need to chat with me that would also be most possible at that time (I am sometimes on the network for hours at a time in the evening).
  • Weekly group chat sessions to be Sundays at 12 noon eastern daylight time (11am Central, 10 Mountain, 9am Pacific) starting March 18. I'm looking into an independent chat channel so we don't have cross talk with other cone6pots members who are not in this group, but it should work out either way. If you cannot be available for the chat session, you will have to make contact with members another way.
    • To Prepare for the chat session you could post your questions in your workspace and ask the others to answer as replies in your workspace. Remember you can have chat open at the same time that your workspace discussion is open. YOU WILL HAVE TO REFRESH YOUR WORKSPACE BROWSER WINDOW TO SEE NEW REPLIES THERE, but Chat replies pop up instantly. To save chat Q & A you will need to copy and paste it somewhere (a Word document, a Notepad document, or your workspace.) We can copy and paste the whole chat session into a discussion topic and then you can pick out the parts that are important to you.
  • You can broadcast a message to the entire group for help at any time, if you are stumped on something. It will go straight to everyone's email account. Someone may be able to come online and chat with you, or answer your question in your workspace.
  • This is a peer study group and functions best if it is highly co-operative. As the leader, George Lewter will try to stay a little ahead of the group, but he is not a qualified accounting instructor, and does not have all the answers. Some questions will require some research: online, at the library, or by asking an accountant that you may know.  Then the answer can be brought back and shared with the group.
  • There are three main goals for this group initially.
    1. That we understand the terminology and categories of small business activities and transactions.
    2. That we understand the basics of bookkeeping well enough to read and interpret, as well as create small business forms such as chart of accounts, journals, balance sheets, and profit and loss statements.
    3. That we are able to migrate the information about our businesses correctly into the electronic bookkeeping system at waveaccounting.com. Then we should be able to generate the reports needed to assess our business's health at any time, as well as the reports for annual statements and tax filings.
  • Other goals may be set by by the group as the session proceeds.
  • Lined paper and a ruler to draw some columns should be the only supplies needed. If you prefer you can print the blank 2-column sheet that is attached to this discussion to work with. You can use a calculator or the one that is included as an accessory application on your computer.
  • Additional electronic forms are available for download on the Supplemental Sources Page. Some can be filled in and calculated using Excel. Others are Word or PDF forms that can be printed blank or filled in and calculated manually while on the computer. If you find more useful forms add them as comments to that page.

Sherry,  Go to the discussion forum front page and there is a link at the bottom of the others that have posted a workspace.  Click on "add discussion" i think is what it says and make yours.  Hope this helps, June

Study Tip - You can copy a whole tutorial and paste it into Word.  Then you can highlight, bold or whatever you want to emphasize the points that are important or hard to keep straight.
