How to prevent database pollution or how to clean up the insight-Live data. Your views please.

My main reason to use Insight-Live is the chemistry calculation and comparison between recipes. Many recipes entered into the database fail to calculate chemistry, because the materials are misspelled, named differently or the colouring oxides are included. I cannot change the recipe when I am not the owner. So what should I do? Let's take Leach Clear as an example.

 

Material "frit,Ferro 3124" does not exist in the Materials data  and hence the calculation fails.

I could

1- copy the recipe and change it but that results in recipe pollution

2- ask the owner to change it, but I hate to bother him, especially since he entered very many recipes

3- add "frit, Ferro 3124" to  Our Materials with a reference to Ferro Frit 3124 and do something similar for "feldspar, Custer" and "kaolin, calcined".  This pollutes the Our Materials data.

On top of this solution 3 does not work when coloring oxides or eg. bentonite are specified as materials and not as additions.

And I still have to revert to solution 1 when I need to replace a material that I cannot buy here by one that I can get.

So, what do you think the best approach would be?

Well that's pretty slick.  Just by checking "Show Reference Material" I can find the correct name for raw materials.   I suspect there's a lot of Insight-Live I don't know yet.

Since the two versions of 3134 only show up with a search, I assume my screenshot of "Our Materials" is not the same list you see in that section, since everything on my list are raw materials I have added.

Quite a number of my recipes use Wollastonite without problem from the primary raw materials database. (click on screenshot to expand it)  I don't think we should be creating additional entries for raw material which already exists in the Digitalfire database.

I was checking out floating Blue George and Wollastonite doesn't come up properly.  When I search "Our Materials" it is misspelled as Wollastoniet.  May solve a few problems with this correction :)

Just had time for a few as I need to go out.  Still feeling my way around Insight so if my copy of copy of etc is wrong I'll delete.  May have to link photos and extra notes to new version as extra step.

Rather than link photos, just right-click on any photos in the original recipe to save them.

Then upload these photos to your new version of the recipe.

My preference is to record the original recipe, even though it may total to a number other than 100, especially when retotalling the ingredients to 100 results in fractions. 

An example is the recipe you copied from George Lewter, which I renamed Tenmoku Gold - Delete. 

You'll notice that it's identical to the Tenmoku Gold recipe just to the right, but the original recipe uses whole numbers and adds up to 90 and contains sample tiles.  For those who prefer numbers which add up to 100, you'll notice Insight-Live has this automatically calculated just to the right of the recipe numbers as entered. I've deleted the original George Lewter recipes you copied.

So it pays to look at all of the recipes with the same root name to see which are actually unique recipes.

I get the same list you do when I search with a blank field, so frankly, I do not know why the two 3134 search results do not show up in a blank search. And it makes me wonder what else is there :)

George - Is "your" Val's Turquois Cone 6 Gloss recipe different from Val's Turquoise II ? 

The differences are very tiny, which might have been the result of rounding errors.

I usually include bentonite as a raw material rather than an addition because it's an essential part of the glaze when there is not enough clay-like material to suspend the glaze.

I've found a glaze without bentonite often creates a test tile very different from one with the bentonite because it changes the chemistry of the glaze.

We have a Cadmium-Red CM-941 Frit from Laguna which turns black if 2% bentonite is added, yet being a complete frit glaze it doesn't suspend. The best solution I've found is either adding a gum, or adding 0.1% Bentone-EW from Trinity Ceramics which has the suspending power of 2% bentonite.  The 0.1% amount of Bentone-EW does denatures the red glaze but only imperceptively.

I agree, especially since anybody who wants it to sum up to eg 100 can choose to enter that number next to " batch" and press "batch" to get a print for those quantities.

You probably already know this, but when you have the original and the new recipe open and click on 'edit' for the photo in the original recipe, the photo will have a Establish Link to item with a link to the new recipe, click the link, save the photo  and it is added to the new recipe.

I'll have to try that out - especially to see if the photo in the "recipe copy" survives the deletion of the "original recipe".

Clicking on Edit on each original photograph, then in the photo edit window, clicking on the link the photo to the Recipe Copy, works terrific and survives the deletion of the original recipe.  Thanks for pointing out that feature Marina.

I cleaned up Krakowkski Little Alex Porter Cone 6 gloss (named same then copy) as it's a glaze that I really like and have been using.   Went back into Tenmoku Gold Teadust to add title and explanation to the picture and somehow my picture is linked to the other Tenmoku Gold glazes in our db.  They are slightly different and this picture is linked to all three but shouldn't be.  I haven't been able to correct?
