Potters & Sculptors - Making Rock from Mud
Comment
Hi Trish,
Yours came out pretty close, sorry you don't like it. It could have gone a hair higher for the melt and a slow cool definitely gives more crystals but you can tell it's Frogskin. jhp
Not all frogs are the same.
Frogskin seems to look completely different on each different type of clay.
Ceramics really does require controlling a huge number of factors.
Jeff,
Since I just made only 200 grams, I did not sieve... Usually I sieve glazes that have a lot of one colorant, or one that has not been used for a while. Well, maybe, I sieve most large batches, not smaller test batches. 100-500 gram.
I can't imagine those subs having that dramatic of an effect on the recipe. Are you sieving the glaze? I'm a firm believer in the non-sieving as I think you can sieve a lot of character right out of the glaze. I have noticed when I spray this particular glaze that there is a little clumping going on, but nothing that won't go through the sprayer at 60 psi. jhp
Jeff,
I subbed the Custer with G200hp, and Gerstley Borate with Gilespie Borate, and upped the silica by +1.
I tested it over white universal slip, and you can see a tad bit more green, that on the test tile with just buff clay.
Just checking to make sure this is the recipe that you are using:
Custer Feldspar 22
Gerstley Borate 22
Neph Syen 22
Silica 26
Wollastonite 3
EPK 3
Titanium Diox 2
Red Iron Oxide 3
Copper Carb 4
Bentonite 2
This is the one I use that Kathy posted here on this site. jhp
Jeff, yes on a buff clay. It has a little more green than the photo shows. Maybe I will make up another batch and test it. This batch was only 200 grams, and I used 3 test tiles.
