I made up a slip recipe from the "Cone 5-6 Glaze book (pg 116). It wasn't the colour but the application. I can see the brush marks and the clay colour underneath. I have only played with majolica at college (tafe), must have another go. I've done three firings in my kiln, each one has had at least 15 test tiles, trying different glazes and cooling cycles.

I have done a lot of majolica over glazing in the past and found that the Duncan underglaze I use is weak when it comes to the black at C6. I mix in black stain to make a stronger and denser color, you might try a test with some of your slip with some extra black stain mixed in. Let me know if you need a formula? Denice

Thanks Denice, It was my first. Bit of a steep learning curve. It looks fine but I felt that there is too much white around it. Also the inside after firing revealed that I hadn't put enough slip on. It's either one thing or another. My next two pots I put more slip on only to discover that it was now too thick and I couldn't carve it, it came off in hunks. Like the three bears, next time just right .... maybe.

Nice hummingbird great detail on it, I have never tried that complicated of design with scraffito. I can tell you are a person who likes a challenge. Denice

Harbor Freight is a great place to find unbeatable prices for better HVLP spray guns with stainless steel parts and serviceable economy models, as well as detail guns, all tested by our members for spraying glazes, as well as compressors to power the guns. As yet no one has tested and commented on the remarkably inexpensive air brushes at harbor freight.
The critter siphon gun is a spray alternative that is well liked by some of our members, and is available at amazon.
