Potters & Sculptors - Making Rock from Mud

I like how rutile causes glaze to break...
Sorry, I should have read past posts - I see this has been discussed. A note in case I was misunderstood - I would not add rutile to the glaze itself. I was just talking about brush or pouring decorations. Rutile in the glaze will give a tan/gold. You probably know that but I don't want someone else to misunderstand. Which talc are you using? I battled with this glaze for some time after we went from Nytal to Texas talc. Nothing I did would get it out of brown before adding the bone ash. When I say thick, I mean REALLY thick. Dime thick is too thin. Soak is not the issue it is cooling slow from 1900-1400F ~ 125/hour.
I can tell you right away that the glaze is too thin. This glaze must go on thick (brushing will seldom work). As I mentioned elsewhere it also has to have a slow cool. You might try adding 1-2% of bone ash. This glaze is very sensitive to the talc and varies with what feldspar you are using. There are many variations on the original glaze that switch feldspars. One gives an olive green break (as does the bone ash on my tests) - can't remember which. It also works wonderfully with glazes that have rutile or with a (5050) rutile/flux wash.

Harbor Freight is a great place to find unbeatable prices for better HVLP spray guns with stainless steel parts and serviceable economy models, as well as detail guns, all tested by our members for spraying glazes, as well as compressors to power the guns. As yet no one has tested and commented on the remarkably inexpensive air brushes at harbor freight.
The critter siphon gun is a spray alternative that is well liked by some of our members, and is available at amazon.
