Brian, thanks for the crash course! Yes, I have Steven Hill's DVD and the setup to spray glazes, just haven't done it yet. I still have enough issues just with regular glazing to figure out. I am more impressed with your work. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great works!

Juli, I do use Hanna's Fake Ash Glaze, but my Val Cushing G4 Glaze does use real wood ash. But it also uses Whiting (Calcium Carbonate) as well. Whiting is typically used in Fake Ash glazes. Real Ash glazes are typically used at Cone 10 as it normally requires the higher temperatures to flux and melt the ash and make it run. At Cone 6 you are not typically going to get the ash melt that you do at Cone 10 so you have to use something like Whiting which fluxes and melts at a lower temperature. If you want to know about the process of applying the layered glazes get your hands on the Surface Techniques of Steven Hill DVD. I pretty much spray all my glazes using small gravity feed detail spray guns which I bought on eBay and use with a small air compressor. Beyond that it is a matter of finding glazes that you like to use and which play well together when spraying and layering.

Your work is really amazing.  I know zero about ash glazing and I dont think its something I will be doing, but I would be interested in the process of applying theses glazes and a little about the science behind it. Why do folks use a fake ash glaze instead of a real ash glaze? Just hoping to become a little more informed, because I am definitely becoming a fan!
