When they are leather hard and I can remove the balloon then I place them over a bowl with a soft towel over it and that acts as an armature allowing me to work on it fairly easily.  I place the bowl on a banding wheel and I paint the shellac on.  I allow the shellac to dry for a minimum of one hour and then I carefully wash away.  I have learned that one has to rub gently with the wet sponge and wash the sponge frequently.  I have been too vigorous in my approach with the sponge and that is when some gets erased.  I love the bas relief effect that it provides.

Pretty cool trick Nadine. Looks like the pot might be kind of hard to manipulate while you are washing. Mine are much smaller and I just hold them upside down by the foot.

The clay is laid on top of the balloon which creates the shape.  The foot is at the very top of the balloon when I am building.  Once the clay is leather hard the air in the balloon is released and then the piece is flipped over onto it's foot.    These happen to be planters so I leave a hole in the center of the foot.  The balloon has to be fairly strong so that you don't pop it!  I use the 16"bouncing balloons that kids play with.  I buy them at the dollar store.
