Hi Juli
If I get it started b4 8pm I can crack it by 7am and pull stuff out by 8:30. I'm looking for a replacement glaze that I get from Bath Potters. It is a low fire Speckle Blue that when I add moly to it and layer it I get the pots that you have seen me post. They don't make it anymore so I have been looking for a replacement. I read on someone's blog that the Show Saver can go from ^3 to ^10. That might make it a candidate for layering. In some of the pics I saw where they added colorants it already looked like some of the metallics were trying to crystallize. Moly is very fussy about crystallizing as it goes from a solid to vapor at about 700C. I'm trying to find the best elements and or glazes to hold it in the glaze structure so that the crystals grow. I don't know if the Moveable Feast would be fluxed enough at ^5-6 but I will try it. It is supposed to be an update of SS but it looks somewhat different. Since I know moly likes manganese I might try the 2 purple versions. I'm going to try for tomorrow. jhp

Jeff,

Boy you are quick with the results. Must have opened the kiln while it was on fire!D

Just wondering what color or effect you are after? I looked at the show saver glaze, but only saw reference to cone 10.

OK, so the Ravenscrag did not like the moly, even with the low fire speckle over it.  It was better, but not acceptable.  I also made a test batch of any Alberta Black, but used Ohio Slip instead & it came out alright.  With the low fire speckle over it, it started segregating & allowing the moly crystals to form.  This weekend I will try Show Saver.  I read that it can fire from ^3-^10.  I wonder if Martins Moveable Feast has the same firing range?  It says it is an updated version of Show Saver, but there are quite a few changes.  Will let you know how it turns out.  jhp

I think I will mix up a little test of the black & throw it in with the re-fire tonite.  I have the Ravenscrag & also Ohio slip.  Ohio slip is said to be a very close match to Albany.  There aren't many recipes on their sight for it, but on one they spray just the plain slip & fire it to ^6 & it looks like Albany slip.  i should test that as well.  jhp

Hey Jeff,

No, I haven't , but I want too. I ordered the Alberta slip before I knew I had to calcine it, otherwise I would have used the Ravenscrag. Lazy here too, and the bad thing is I have to do it all again when I make up another batch. ugh!

Hi Juli,

Just wondering if you have tried using Ravenscrag instead of Alberta?  I have seen recipes with 80% Ravenscrag & 20% FF3134 with various colorants & no calcining & wondered if they work as well.  I guess I am just lazy & didn't want to have to calcine ingredients.  I think I'll give the Glossy Black a try.  jhp

 Tony Hansens rutile blue glaze

40% Alberta slip

40% Alberta slip (calcined)

20% frit 3134

5% rutile    (I tested 4% and 5%) and I liked 5%

really three ingredients , you just have to put some of the alberta slip in bowls and fire it in your

kiln to make it calcined.  Tony had a great thread on this glaze here a few mt. back.  I tested it on all my clays.  I did not like it on my Armadillo cinco blanco clay.  This clay is Armadillo Cinco rojo,

It looks totally different on Bmix, and great on Trinity cone 6 clay.

Hi! Great looking pieces. I am looking for both green and blue satin (or high gloss) glazes that will work well with my firing schedule. The blue I am using tends to pin hole, especially if I do more than one high fire. Mind sharing this glaze? Thank you! Joe Shaw
