Potters & Sculptors - Making Rock from Mud
Comment
I have a friend who used to go to take her clay to her community studio and roll her slabs, sandwich them between boards, wrap all in plastic then transport them back home. Her husband bought her a slab roller for Christmas so as there is no way I could manage all of that lifting and carrying maybe I should conscript my husband to help me! I do use a rolling pin and it works but I'm using porcelain right now and need a bigger rolling pin so it reaches across the larger slabs I need to thickness guides each side. Getting an even thickness is a little difficult and if I use a long dowel to roll, the slab becomes uneven when I move my hands. The possibility of making a really wide roller with PVC, plaster, copper tubing through the centre, and a dowel run through that would solve the problem of changing grip and make a really effective, wide roller. Hmm this may be worth more thought!?
This slab roller is a Brent 6 footer. Sorry to say I don't own it- wish I did - It's the slab roller I use all of the time in the studio where I teach. It IS a Fantastic one- runs about 2,600 New I believe. I have used the tabeltop ones and they are not great- I roll out most of my slabs by hand right now. I have become very good at it and getting a slab roller has moved down on the list - but still on it:)
I'm looking for a slab roller I can afford (feels like an oxymoron at this point!) and haven't had any success. I'm thinking of attempting to make one and am suffering serious slab roller envy.
Gotta love that slab roller! :)
