Maulik I just read an interesting discussion on Raku saggar firings and the different chemicals and other metals that potters are trying.  I thought you might be interested, it's at ceramicartsdaily.org.   It's under Clay and Glaze Technical under saggar firing started by Marcia Selsor a well known potter.    Denice

hey norm, you are right i think... but this is also a gas kiln. we dont have any electric kiln in our studio. i think this should also work fine. i will let you know the performance. :)

As I understand the concept, this type of electric Raku kiln takes the heat up with the heating elements and surrounding brick which minimizes the thermal shock on these very hot kiln parts.

Only the kiln floor, furniture and ware are exposed to the shock of a sudden temperature drop as the kiln is raised.

Some folks at our studio want to build a Raku kiln, but they want to use propane as a heat source with fiber blanket insulation supported by a welded frame, so they can just as well use a front-loaded design.

A commercial studio near us has replaced their gas kiln with three electric kilns due to safety and insurance concerns.

oh ok, i didnt give captions to each photo but i gave name to the album.. but anyways this is not the new way of building a raku kiln. i have seen many of these kind of designs on internet and also in pottery equipment stores. there are advantages and disadvantages of this type of kiln because you loose more temperature every time you open the kiln. but for me to lift the hot articles from side of the kiln is better than the top of the kiln to avoid heat coming on my face... still some mechanism need to be fixed to lift the top part.. i will complete it and post the picture..:)

The question mark left open the possibility the photo was something I'd never seen before.

When people post photos without a caption, it's like being on a quiz show.

A Raku kiln? Where you can lift the majority of the kiln above the ware.
