Stains in a cone low expansion transparent glaze

These are some different mason stains in the cone 6 transparent G1215U glaze. Google 'G1215U' for the recipe, it is very good on porcelains but has an MgO containing frit which is more expensive (but worth every penny). It was formulated to be very low expansion, so it not only is less likely to craze, but is adjustable.

I made G1215U yesterday and tried a batch with 3% Magnesium Carbonate added, which increases the magnesium in the glaze by 53% from 2.4% to 3.7%. The extra Magnesium makes the glaze really silky, smooth and just a little glossier.

It costs more but, as you say it's worth it. Looking at the two glazes with a variety of Mason Satins
 today, people at our studio were oohing and ahhing over the G1215U with the added MgCO3.

I also made some G1215U using Ferro Frit 3124, instead of 3249, yesterday which is less shiny but also makes a nice base for Mason Stains with a stiffer melt which covers better on texture and edges. But not as popular as the G1215U with extra magnesium carbonate.

It's just like the fact that our most popular glazes are those containing tin oxide, which is also expensive at $26 a pound. The more tin a glaze has the more people like it, even though many are really just variations of another. Glazes like:

Bailey Shino, 5% tin oxide;

Cream Breaking Rust, 13% tin oxide;

Heidi's Eggshell, 9% tin oxide;

Metallic (Green, Ocean Blue, and Sky Blue), 6.8% tin oxide;

Ron Roy Nutmeg, 4.85% tin oxide;

Spotted Aqua Brown, 2.9%;

Warm Jade, 5% tin oxide;

White Bird, 6% tin oxide.

Magnesium does give that nice satin glaze surface.

What was the Mason Stain name for 6139?  It looks like 6392 Dusty Lavender.

Is your yellow 6344, actually 6433 which was replaced with 6450 Praseodymium Yellow?

Hi Tony - I have lots of frit 3134 and no Frit 3249, but I am seeing some crazing on plates, so switching to G1215U sounds like the thing to do.  Thanks for the feedback and advice - much appreciated, Susan

Thanks for this Tony!  Thanks for posting this. I am currently using the G1412W on Plainsman M370, but am wondering if this will give me a better fit.  Any thoughts?  I will test it out next glaze firing. Susan
