Potters & Sculptors - Making Rock from Mud
I have been trying to get iron red out of my kiln ever since I replaced it. Kept trying to slow cool from 1800 F down to 1500 F- This is proving to me that the "sweet spot" is lower in temp than I've been going. In an attempt to save a load of tableware through its slow cool cycle after my sitter tripped and stopped the kiln, I ramped it back up from 1227 up to 1800 and then slow cooled, 150 per hour to 1500. Somewhere in the process I turned all of my brown dishes red/orange. After putting them back in the kiln and refiring to cone 6, they darkened up to a much nicer red, with dark flecks and fun stuff on the surface. They don't match the rest of the set, but they are kind of cool.
The saga continues.
8/18 update(and note to self): 1250 degrees is not hot enough. I did a low bisque of pots (^018 with a 15 min hold) with terra sig on them for a barrel firing and threw in some wfl brown test pots to see if they'd turn. No dice. Next test will be closer to 1500, I guess.
Latest- magic temp for me is 1650 F with an hour hold- I then slow cool, 150 per hr, to 1400.
