Darvan/dispersant & slip ..is that the need 4 non-Newtonian thixotropic character reversel in wheelwork.

We have a lot of recycled white slip waste offcuts which I have tried to get to a point through the pugmill to be able to do wheelwork .I have experimented with added Grogs and Kaolin.The big problem…Continue

Hi,It has been awhile, but I have been very busy reacting to the advice given with great success, . This was exactly what I needed to do Norm. The clay restoration from slip to wheelwork experiment was done with 2x additions and I tested Bentonite Calcium 100# as well as Bentonite Calcium, "albeit at double the cost "..the. 300#.  There has been no noticeable difference between the 2 grades. "Darvan traps calcium and magnesium ions in clay and releases sodium ions in exchange To reverse this, you need to add calcium and or magnesium ions to exceed the Darvan level and flocculate the clay again. I use calcium chloride, used to melt ice.…"

What is your experience with ceramics in general. (Long answer encouraged)
Some after school 1968 and holiday week classes in local Hermannsburg German community in KWA ZULU NATAL, PROVINCE of South Africa.
1 year course at BAFA University of KZN.
Continued as hobby only till...
2015 I got retrenched from a 9 to 5 Management post for 30 years..
NOW... seriously making a living and wheel throwing or pouring to mould making...etc.
I only AAA cone 6 !
What is your current involvement with electric fired ceramics? (long answer encouraged)
I have 4 barrel kilns of various sizes. Large to very small barrel test kiln. Firing in Celsius BISQUE 1020*c with 30 minute dwell.
CLAY USED: commercial white ceramic premix/blend powder "TERRADURA" The name says it. FineClay. FIRING Range from 1020*c to 1040*c .
HAVE TAKEN IT TO 1200*C noted some shrinkage and slight buff colour.
All our content is viewable by the public. Why do you want to be a member, when you can already see everything as a non-member?
I NEED TO NETWORK WITH OTHER POTTERS.. WE ARE VERY ISOLATED HERE.

As yet no one has tested and commented on the remarkably inexpensive air brushes at harbor freight.

The critter siphon gun is a spray alternative that is well liked by some of our members, and is available at amazon.

ebay is a great alternative for many tools and the equipment used in the ceramics studio - kilns, wheels, extruders, slab rollers are often listed there both new and used.
