Eleanor, yes I use Val Cushing's G4 ash glaze a lot coupled with Steven Hills's spraying techniques and some of his other glazes and firing schedule from his latest DVD. I think it's called Surface Techniques. Steven does not use Val Cushing's G4 glaze, but I use his Strontium Crystal Magic (Warm and Cool Versions), and Hanna's Fake Ash Glaze, some iron saturate glazes, Steven's Satin Matt glazes sometimes, etc. This particular bowl WB9 I sprayed some Strontium Crystal Magic (Warm Version) between the Rim and bottom of bowl, a little Hannas Fake Ash on the rim, Val Cushings G4 ash glaze (1.5% Cobalt Oxide, 6% Rutile) over those other glazes and then used Steven Hill's Firing schedule from his DVD. Also, I have reduced the amount of Washed Wood Ash in the G4 recipe to 30% instead of 50% to make is slightly less runny. I would not use these glazes for functional pottery as I have no clue how food safe they are. Decorative pottery use only. You can see the slightly more yellow tint around the rim. That is from the Hanna's Fake Ash glaze. Enjoy
could you please give some info on glazes. could this be val cushing ash as cited in a previous message. i first saw the ash green on a bowl that was listed on 1/4/2010 with the following glaze - Val Cushing's G4 Cone 5-6 Ash Glaze
Washed Wood Ash 50
Gerstley Borate 20
Whiting 12
EPK 8
Silica 10
Cobalt Carbonate 1
Copper Carbonate 6
but did you use any other glaze with it. it is all very interesting but we all could use more info to fully appreciate the work.
sorry just saw the additional comments following this which explains more about your work. i thought i'd leave my comments in to add to the discussion and also repeat my plea for everyone to give more info per photo.
but despite my carping about the lack of info on the picture i really think your work is lovely and i am glad tobe able to see it on line
CP I use Hanna's Fake Ash a lot but this one is mostly Val Cushing's G4 Glaze Recipe with only 30% washed wood ash instead of the 50% his recipe calls for with Cobalt Carb colorant. Also, sprayed light amount of Strontium Crystal Magic (Steven Hills Warm Version) before applying the VC Ash glaze. I dont' know exactly name of sprayers but I use very small orifice detail spray guns like auto body sprayers use for pin stripe work. I put all glazed throught a 100 mesh sieve before spraying and around 20 PSI spray pressure. All my work is Cone 6 electric using Steven Hills firing schedule.
Forgive my glaze question, did not see the VC reference. The glaze gives legs like a good wine. cp
Brian, i love ash glazes when they look like a forest. Which sprayer are you using to apply glazes ?
Is this one Hannah's Fake ash with colorant ? SH Fake ash ? thanx, cp
