Red and orange are very expensive colors if you want them to survive cone 6 or cone 10.  These colors can be achieved at a far lower cost at cone 06 using Ferro Cadmium frits CM-940 for yellow and CM-941 for red.

I have a small container or Coyote Really Red myself.  It's mostly Red Mason Stain, or a competitor product with a smaller percentage of a zircopax-like opacifying product to make the red more intense.  Based on the texture it's likely suspended with a small amount of bentonite rather than a large portion of kaolin like less expensive underglazes.

Mason Dark Red 6088 Stain costs about $37 a pound from Axner.  It's a cadmium-selenium silicate encapsulated in zirconia.  Mason Tangerine 6027 is less costly cadmium-selinate costing under $25 per pound.  Other Mason stains cost less than $15 per pound.

Occasionally you'll find a glaze chemistry which is not compatible with zircon encapsulation resulting in the glaze foaming with either the Mason encapsulated stain or the Coyote Really Red which, tipped me off that RR is mostly encapsulated stain.

I both both, along with a selection of less costly colors for our studio.  We mix them with water and gerstley borate, but you can just as easily mix them with bentonite and a small percentage of a Ferro frit to help the stain adhere in the firing.

thanks for the scoop. Maybe we can get Norm Stewart to stir up something like this. That's his favorite entertainment.

Lawrence, I can't claim credit for this red glaze. It is a commercial Coyote red glaze. Have not found any publicly accessible red glazes like this for Cone 6 oxidation out on the internet that you can just mix up and go. In fact this was probably $8 worth of glaze just on this one bowl. So I use this type of commercial red glaze mostly as an accent glaze but I wanted to make a red bowl so I did it. The brown around the edges is Hanna's Fake Ash over the commercial red glaze.
