Thanks for the wonderful advice Dale. Much appreciated. That is very helpful. These pieces are so beautiful and the glaze used just suits them perfectly...

Hi Jan..Sorry I'm so slow in getting back to ya. I use several different reds. You can get this color of red with many of them including Randy's Red. There are several keys to getting good reds. Here’s what works for me...

1. Clay body is important – You will get a better red color with a high iron clay body (I use Highwater Clays Red Stone).

2. Thickness-The glaze needs to be applied a little on the thick side. If application is too thin your glaze will be black.

3. A little spray of any wood ash glaze will add brightness to the red color. I have tried many different ash glazes and Val Cushing’s Apple Wood ash is a good one. I don’t use apple wood ash, I just use regular ol’ fireplace ash that has been screened. Caution should be taken when spraying and working with ash glazes (or any other glaze)…always wear a mask when spraying and working with glaze chems.. and wear gloves when mixing…in the wet state, wood ash is caustic and can burn your skin. You probably know all this stuff but it never hurts to remind folks.

Thanks again…Dale

Amazing Dale. Are the glazes used here from this site or something else please?
