Glaze Crystals - Porcelain over Paper-clay

Tangerine Glaze Crystals in a Yellow Mason Stain glaze. Porcelain over a paper-clay base.

Last year we searched for "Glaze Crystals" for a granite look or other crystal glazes and found the industry supplier in Maryland. They melt into larger patterns at ^6 shown here, or can be used at ^06.

To use their "online store" you need to request a catalog. We ordered mostly larger mesh and crush them if people want smaller crystals. You can combine them to make any of the looks shown in these prepared Mayco Jungle Gem glazes.

Here's the price per pound we paid, comparable to Mason Colors. Needless to say, their range of stock is larger than what we purchased:

$13.85 _ FLG-460 _ Dark Golden Rod Crystals 6/16/Mesh (8 oz)
$14.08 _ FLG-470 _ White Crystals 6/10 Mesh (8 oz)
$14.68 _ FLG-489 _ Moss Green Crystals 6/20 Mesh (8 oz)
$14.08 _ FLG-491 _ Chartreuse Crystals 6/20 Mesh (8 oz)
$16.73 _ FLG-495 _ Yellow Crystals 6/20 Mesh (8 oz)
$15.28 _ FLG-514 _ Burnt Orange Crystals 6/20 Mesh (8 oz)

This is a typical look at ^06 in a white base glaze.

FLG-464 Blue Crystals 6/16 Mesh

FLG-541 Red Crystals 6/16 Mesh

This Mayco "Wildfire" ^06 prepared glaze uses larger mesh yellow "reactive" crystals with smaller mesh brown crystals. Rabco uses the word "reactive" for crystals which bloom in "unpredictable ways".

From their website:

RABCO, Inc. has been supplying Ceramic Glaze Crystals for use in ceramic coatings since 1979. Our customer list includes virtually all domestic manufacturers of glazed wall and floor tile, commercial dinnerware and cookware, prepared hobby glazes, lamp bases and artware, structural clay products, specialty porcelain and sanitary ware. In addition to the conventional “gold dust” and “salt & pepper” effects, Glaze Crystals can be used in many other ways to provide your products with new and different looks.

Our regular Glaze Crystals offer another design tool to enhance the "flat" look of many ceramic coatings. These materials can introduce complimentary or contrasting colors to the background color.

Combining several colors and sizes can result in the ever-popular "Granite" look. Using only one color in a disco-applied granite glaze can shift the overall color effect without another glaze application.

RABCO Glaze Crystals can simulate iron spots on brick and quarry tile surfaces and can be used to produce the ever popular "enamel ware" coatings on white ware bodies. Also, we offer "reactive" Glaze Crystals, the use of which can produce unusual and often unpredictable results in certain glaze compositions.
