Potters & Sculptors - Making Rock from Mud
Comment
Ya, I got this glaze out of a pottery book that I was learning from. I don't mind sharing it at all. Here's the recipe from my GlazeChem database:
Rootbeer Brown
---------------
Range: Cone 6
Firing type: Oxidation
Glaze type: Mid-fire
Color: Dark Brown
Surface: Semi-gloss to Gloss
Transparency: Translucent
Flow: None
Durability: Good
Testing: Tested
Recipe:
Custer feldspar 30.30
Whiting 25.60
EPK 7.60
Silica 36.50
-------- -----
100.00
Red iron oxide 11.70
Variations:
Replace Iron Oxide w/ 5% Copper Carbonate = Glossy Green
Notes:
Semi matt dark brown thin to glossy amber thick
Great stable glaze, prime glaze for dishware
Glossy White over Rootbeer Brown = Specked Yellowish Tan (resembles bamboo over
textured pottery)

What is the brown glaze on the bottom half of these? I have a glaze similar to this that i make from local clay that's dug in Bethune, SC. It takes a ton of work to get the trash and rocks and stuff out of the clay and get it sieved fine enough to use in a glaze. If you have a recipe it would help me tremendously.
