4x4x5 B Mix 5 cone 6 clay. creamy matt over copper wash. I plan to build a handle from copper and oxidize it and attach through two holes in the lid. I really like this piece, but I has stress cracks at the lid on two corners. I will try again.

I posted a second photo this AM.  It may be helpful to know also that the copper wash I use was made from equal parts by volume of copper carb and a clear gloss glaze.  Also, the copper wash was applied quite heavily and wiped down with a damp rag - wiped less so in the texture areas than in the non-textured.  From my test tile, I knew the copper would go black in the texture if left fairly thick, and that was an effect I wanted on the box.  Both the clear glaze and the creamy matt are commercial glazes that I buy in dry bulk from Coyote.

I am seeing the colour as a pale turquoise; it will be interesting to see another shot of this considering that you say that the colour is a bit less intense than this photo.  I am definity going to run a test tile and try for this effect - I imagine that the overall effect could be quite different depending on the composition of the matt glaze.   Again, a very nice piece.  Susan

Thanks, Tracy.  It is all coming from the copper carbonate.  the browns and blacks are a heavier application of the copper.  also, the greens are not a bright as they appear in the photo, they are softer with just a few bright spots along edges.  I may try another photo later.

Susan, your my first commenter, ever....... thanks for the encouragement.  The Creamy Matt is a premixed glaze from Coyote.  I don't believe it has any colorants in it, when fired plain, it is white.  It has a very soft touch, and really reacts well to the copper wash.  I also tested it with an iron wash and a rutile wash, but it did not work so well with them.  Again, thanks for the interest.  -carl

Hi Carl - I really love the overall look of this piece and the glazing effect is excellent.  What colourants are in the creamy matt glaze?  Susan
