Hi Joan, I missed your response to my comment to you. That is the only thing with this website. I would like it if there was some sort of link that posted all responses to comments/replies to our 'Own Page' so we dont miss out on conversations. I built myself a catenary arch, crossdraft kiln. I travelled around to see various kiln designs before deciding on what type of kiln I wanted to build. It was alot of hard work, especially since i used to cut and split all the timber myself as well. But saying that I loved the experience. I am going to ask at a fairly local craft/art centre about participating in a woodfiring this winter.  Hope they say yes.

Wood fire kilns are my passion. What kind did you build? I am interested in constructing a train kiln. There are none existing in my neck of the woods (Quebec). I have to figure out some technical problems like frost heaving etc. before I make a slab foundation. I have collected some local materials but have yet to do anything with them. Lindsay Oesterritter(sp) is an american potter who is doing or was doing a lot of work with locally found materials. Very interesting because it gives a very different quality to the work when it isn't overrefined just like food.

Still searching for my ash glaze recipe.

Okay, thanks Joan. That would be wonderful. Experimenting with readily available and naturally occuring materials really interests me. We have a wood fire at home, so apart from loving the look of ash glazes, we have heaps. Have a couple of recipes that I have used made from my own ash, but always on the look out for others. I don't wash my ash either, just sieve them. I have been using a Val Cushing Green Ash C6 and Hannah's Fake Ash. Just sprayed a pot ready for firing today with the VC Green Ash and excited to see the results.

I built a wood kiln about ten years ago because I love woodfired pots, but I only got to use it six or seven times before moving interstate. Was just starting to get it after various adjustments. That was a wonderful experience for me and I learned alot. Lately, I have also been experimenting with clays and sandstone found locally. Have you ever tried to make glazes from local clays etc.

Hello Jan, Yes this is an ash glaze that I fire 6/7/8 electric with a good hold at cone 7 for 30 min. I don't wash my ashes and I will dig up the recipe. I will post at Michael's discussion on ash glaze. I see you have submitted one there.

Wonderful Joan. Few things please. Is this ash glaze a cone 6 recipe? What colour was you clay underneath. Was the ash sprayed over the entire pot? Would it be possible to ask for the recipe please. Thanks.
