Potters & Sculptors - Making Rock from Mud

that is very helpful

Larry - Indigo Float is another cobalt with rutile glaze, like my Clear Blue Burst in the Insight Database, but Indigo Float uses a larger amount of rutile.
Firebrick Red can be made with Mason 6006 Deep Crimson stain for $20.40 per pound mixed with a clear glaze base. http://www.axner.com/mason-stain-6006.aspx This stain is a chrome/tin combo so the glaze must contain 12% to 15% calcium carbonate and is incompatible with zinc. An more robust alternative is mixing Mason 6088 Dark Red with Mason 6338 Cobalt Metasilicate, as both resist zinc and have no calcium requirement.
This test tile is the red iron oxide based Floating Red aka Amaco "PC-53 Ancient Jasper" over a layer of Mason 6006 Deep Crimson mixed with gerstley borate aka "PC-59 Deep Firebrick Red". You can easily see the difference between the orange Red Iron compared with the true red created by a synthetic stain.
darn it, I was hoping these were glazes you had mixed
thanks for the info
It is Potter's Choice Firebrick Red with PC Indigo Float on rim and handle.

If you just want to spout off, it is best accomplished as a blog posting. If you want to get more guidance and ideas from other members, ask a question as a new discussion topic. In the upper right corner of the lists for both types of posting, you will find an "+Add " button. Clicking it will open an editor where you create your posting. 4/16/2014
