Vase bisque fired and hung on a string placed in a salt water canal for 3 months. Pulled from the water and left in the garden for another month. Color was created by wrapping the piece in an iron scrub pad creating rust while in the water. I plan to experiment in the future with firing pieces like this in a saggar with and without ferric chloride.

Thanks for the comments.....George...it would be very hard to get barnacles in the heartland......but I bet you have PLENTY of horse manure that I find hard to get in my area.....(fire with that in sappar and pits).  Michelle, I have another piece (female torso) that I'm working on with a similar effect.....it has more oysters than barnacles.  Jan....mother nature is prety wonderful....she also has a sense of humur......you'll see what I mean when you see the torso...;-)

Wow, how beautiful. I have been working on a series of Raku pots for an exhibition called 'Sea Shells' so I am loving this pot. Mother nature is a wonder. Thanks for sharing Louis.

Those are the prettiest barnacles I've ever seen!  Talk about getting a natural look on your pots, wow.

You definitely walk to the beat of a different drummer.  What a great idea.  Hard for us in the heartland to imitate, though :-)
