I use nutmeg because the version I use looks like wood fire shino. It has to be put on thin. I either pour on a thin coat or use a small natural sponge and put on a thin coat. The color varies from brick ed to cream. Coat thickness is the key with nutmeg.

Thanks, Randy.  Wonder if the nutmeg uses the same?  My nutmeg isn't as beautiful as some pics I see on here.

In order for it to work right you have to have Special red iron oxide.  It is called Special Red nothing else will work.  I got mine from US Pigments.

I used Spanish red, what is the name of what I should use?

I have crocus martis, is that better?

Sorry not I may have failed to mention that you have to use special red iron oxide that is a pure form of Rio.

Randy, I have tested this glaze and can only get a dark muddy cordovan look, like old 50's penny loafers.  yuch!  I used a 500* drop from peak to 1800, then a 125 hour drop to 16oo* and a 30 min hold there, then off.  any suggestions, I would really like this sort of a red, no luck so far.

Yes it is oxidation.  Usually do an hour hold about 1750F.  Easy glaze.  Probably do not have to do hold.  Layers great.

It's beautiful! Is this achieved in oxidation?

Should be CHT or C Harris Tem. the glaze you gave me.  Great glaze.  Best iron red I have ever used.  Gets great depth when layering.  Very smooth feeling.  One of my favorites now.  Probably one of the best iron reds that few people know about in pottery.  Never saw it until I got on your site and I have been doing pottery since 1976.  Thanks for it.
