Steven Hill's first images of ^6 pots

In December of '08 I made the switch from ^10 reduction to ^8 oxidation. In August of '10 I began experimenting with lowering my firing temperature further to ^6. Since then all of my work has been fired to ^6 oxidation, without compromising my aesthetic in the least. In fact if anything, my colors and surfaces have been improving! Down firing is essential to give time for crystal development and with computerized kilns there are no limitations to the variety of down firing cycles possible!

At this point I still consider the ^6 formulas experimental. SCM, the Water Colors, and Juicy Fruits have not changed. Everything else has been altered to lower the maturation temperature.

I am working on an article tentatively titled "Atmospheric Results For Electric Firing" and I will not be giving out formulas until they have been thoroughly evaluated and the article has been published. I am experimenting with new glazes in each firing, so if you have great glazes, I would love to add them to my experiments.

Hello Steven - I went to your workshop in Prescott last year and it was wonderful.  Hope you are doing well.  I understand that you are still experimenting with cone 6 glazes and firing, but I wonder if you would share your revised firing schedule when firing to cone 6.  Your colors are wonderful.  Thx, MJ

Great work, Stephen. The colors are more intense at cone 6 than at higher temperatures, the red-orange range is eye-popping! Thank you for posting these wonderful, high-res photos that we can zoom in on to get macro details just by repeatedly clicking on the desired image.
