Thank you, Denise! Since these pictures were taken, I have added an external, programmable controller to the same kiln. Although a complex, controlled firing is possible with a manual kiln, it is not something you will want to do very frequently or for too many years. You may have already seen my page at http://cone6pots.ning.com/page/how-to-downfire-a-manual-kiln but here is the link.

After you do a half dozen or so tightly controlled manual firings with soaks and controlled coolings, the investment in a controller will start looking more and more attractive. The amount of tweaking, babysitting, and fiddling with the controls is just too time consuming. $450 for a programmable controller seems like a lot, but after just a few firings you realize it is worth every penny. We have a discussion on conversion at -- http://cone6pots.ning.com/forum/topics/add-a-kiln-controller-to-a manual kiln.
Hi George,

Hi George,

These pictures of your work are a few years old, but they show me I have a lot to learn about glazes & how to fire my kiln. I, like you, have a manual 2 dials kiln. You have shown me it is possible to achive great results with it. I will now start experimenting. More to come..
