Thanks, Carl. I think it was just good old RIO applied thickly and sponged off the high spots.

That could have been me:) I can't resist a closed form, have to open it....  I think I will have to try the reliquary form at some time, I love to make boxes and the reliquary would be a natural extension of that interest.  I will keep in mind your experience with locks and hinges.  Again, nice work.  It seems the stained and bare clay is very effective and appropriate for the piece.

Thanks, Carl. The original hinge pins were clay (silly me). The first time this was shown, many people reached up to pull the doors open, not realizing that they were latched shut. The door latch and 2 hinges broke, so I just wired the whole thing shut and considered it a learning experience.

If the doors did open, they would reveal a simple box behind the false front, and the unexpected footprint of a favourite cat in the clay.
