Once I tried the Mason stains with Ravenscrag I was hooked. So far I have just been mixing 20% stain with 80% Ravenscrag, I haven't even started varying the concentration or blending the colours. At cone6 you get a nice satiny surface without a covering glaze. I imagine at lower temperature or at higher concentration of stain you would have to add some sort of flux. Having said that, please don't take my word for it- remember to test!
(I actually like that Albany slip brown! Reminds me of Medalta beanpots.)
Ravenscrag slip is on our purchase list next time someone visits Laguna Clay. Mason colors don't not look the same with gerstley borate or frit.
Their website suggests adding 10% Ferro Frit 3134 for Cone 6. Do you find this necessary?

We have about 30 pounds of original Albany Slip sitting around. I wish I could find a ^6 recipe which makes Albany slip into something more interesting than this plain UPS brown. Perhaps I'll try a mix of Albany Slip with gerstley borate to make something like Ravenscrag.
Thanks Norm- it is underglaze colours, mainly stains mixed with Ravenscrag slip and water, plus some Mayco pan colours, all somewhat watery to settle in the texture- then clear glaze overall.
For texture I use shells and pieces of coral and a little dried starfish that I found on the beach.
I like your range of techniques. This is like a pop-art palissy style with muted colors.
Is this a layering of glazes in one firing or multiple firings?

As yet no one has tested and commented on the remarkably inexpensive air brushes at harbor freight.
