George, I just saw this morning the recipes for discussion page with 'persimmon' on it. I had mentioned awhile back that my glaze wasn't public because the persimmon isn't from the Sankey Glaze Database. Having said that, many glazes can be made successfully a number of different ways -- so perhaps the recipe posted there works fantastic, it just isn't the recipe I use.

Simply beautiful. A couple of Persimmon variations are in the Recipes for Testing Discussion. No one has verified if they are the same Persimmon that Steven Showalter or other members are using.

Steven, I agree with your testing philosophy.  I always start my throwing days with 6-8 cups for the next kiln load.  You really have this one nailed.  Beautiful and unusual and wonderful that you can replicate it.

@Michele, the persimmon glaze has some lithium in it and when it is applied over both the iron red and also the black it has a similar effect. I'm a big proponent of massive testing, and sometimes with all that testing you get lucky, and if you do enough testing you start to see trends and things become much easier to predict.

What do you think was the cause of the stripe of crystals on the upper part?

All my work that I put on this website is at cone 6, but I also sometimes do cone 10 reduction and I also have a wood-burning kiln I fire too. I just meant that at cone 6 you have to do a bit more work on your glazes whereas cone 10 things you can rely more on the flame.

So is this work at Cone 10 or Cone 6?

Iron reds do take quite a bit of work/testing at cone 6, whereas at cone 10 I don't find a whole lot of trouble with them. Its nice when you have one that works!

CHT (C Harris Temoku) is probably the best iron red I have ever used. Very repeatable.

Persimmon is not a 'public' glaze. When used over this particular version of iron red it produces a copper iridescence. When used by itself it is orange with some iridescence too. What is CHT?
