yeah, I am a hobby potter and do my work in 1/2 of the garage, no means for a spray booth; it's dip, pour, or brush for me:)
Yes, I have used Eggshell, but I buy clear and add zircopax to make a white liner, because I also use the clear and add colorants to make about 5-6 other glazes. I didn't have any success with the shino's -I tried two different versions- but I think application and firing are critical to shino. I really like their Red Gold, but it has to be applied thin, and it's pretty expensive.
also may be of interest, I use Coyote B-Mix-5 white clay. I tried their clay with sand/grog and I liked the feel of working with it, but didn't like the glaze results as well as the B-Mix. I also use their clear glaze and add 12% zircopax to get a white background to work on and where the colors come out brighter. This creamy matt 2+2 is my latest interest and I really like the way it seems to muffle the bright colors some and I like the sandy appearance of the matt with the 2+2 and soft feel of the surface. I would agree that glazing is the thing I with which I struggle the most. But.... I enjoy it all immensely. Take care. - carl
Very nice, thank you for the info. I have been doing this for only a few years now, but have bought about 100 different commercial glazes. The coyote glazes seem to really work well with most other coyote and other Manufactures glazes. The seem to have a nice tolerance for staying happy with many other glazes. Glazing has been my biggest mystery as I enjoy my pottery journey..
sorry, it is Coyote brand Creamy Matt, which I buy in 10 pound dry form and to which I add 2% red iron oxide and 2% rutile. It has a very nice appearance and feel and responds well to the other Coyote glazes which I buy in wet mix pints.
carl - what is creamy matt 2+2? is this a commercial glaze or one you can share. i really like its look.
