I understand from reading that wollastonite does less LOI than whiting.  What are the reasons for using one over the other besides LOI?

I am still in the learning stage of glaze chemistry So the stuff I do not know out wieghts what I do know and what I think I do know may be suspect.  Having said that, I pulled both chemicals up on digital fire insight and one consideration  would be the difference in thermal Expansion; Wollastonite ( 8.96)  Whiting (14.8) this would effect crazing. Also whiting has no silica in it. Wollastonite the ratio is almost 1/2 Ca and 1/2 silica. That would efffect the ratio of Si/Al and that would effect the appearance and the toughness of the glaze. You would need to look at what you were needing in a glaze and then decide which would be best. I have the home version of Digital Fire Insight and also am a member of the Insight data base that Cone 6 has. I have learned more in the last few month through this tool than I have in the last 10 years, mainly becouse it is so easy to use and because other people have collected so much information. Happy firing

Thanks, I have Insight too and wouldn't have been down the road this far with glazes without it!
