How to Hold during a glaze firing

Hi - I love reading these posts and now I have a question myself.  I have a Skutt kiln with an automatic control panel. I generally use the simple cone fire program and fire to cone 6 - very easy. Moving forward, I would like to experiment by firing to cone 6 and then drop the temp slowly (150 degrees/hour) to 1650 degrees and then hold for one hour - then cool normally until complete. I have read the manual 20 times and I just can't figure out how to do this. I called Skutt and the technician verbally explained it to me, but seemed a bit put off when I asked him to go through it again slowly, so I could write it down. He wouldn't go through it again, yet he agreed it's not clear in the operating guide...  Can anyone explain in detail how to do this?  Thanks  Jack

HI Jack,

    I got this from Bartlett quite a while ago & should do the trick for you.  

You have to program user #6 first with your down ramp but you will have to set the user to have 2 segments because you will have to do a up ramp before you can do a down ramp. So basically set the first segment to a temp 2-5 degrees above the cone temp that you are firing to, then in the second segment program you down ramp. Then after that is programed go in and program your cone fire. Once that is done press (if the board is a 600 version) you will press the oF/oC select key in the upper right hand corner and then press 7,8. The screen should change to 16-S. Once this is in the screen then press the 1 key I believe it should go complete then back to idle. Then you will ado a program review and in that review it should show you 16-S. This means that the controller is programed to fire your cone fire then change over and fire your user #6. For the older kiln master skutt manuals you will want to contact skutt or check out there web site for them.
