Glaze Colorant Guidelines and Testing Techniques

I will be at sea on the 15th of January, so this discussion is jumping the gun on the Glaze Education Days event that starts then.

There are general guidelines for the percentages a particular colorant to use in glazes, and then there are very specific guidelines for chemicals that must either be included or excluded in the glaze base for the desired color to be expressed for a particular colorant.

Appropriate additions to this discussion would include:

  • Colorant Percentage charts
  • Technique videos such as the one from John Britt included here.
  • Colorant specific enhancers and antagonists.
  • Base glazes known to work well with a wide range of colorants
  • Base glazes designed to work with hard to attain colors.
  • Related materials.

As yet no one has tested and commented on the remarkably inexpensive air brushes at harbor freight.
