Hi every one,

I have a dilema. I have been producing this lotus pattern with Raku quite successfully.
I would really like to be able to do the same thing with a stoneware firing so that the pieces are functional but still using glazes not underglazes.

I can't quite get my head around it.

I draw the pattern then tape it using auto tape. apply the turquoise and clear crackle, remove the tape and it's ready to fire. The reduction in the bin makes the lines black.

With stoneware I draw, tape, glaze the lotus and then I'm stuck because I don't want the raw clay where the tape was. I've tried liquid wax but that's hopeless. I don't want the 2nd glaze to go over the pattern because I'm sure it would meld and disappear.

Does anyone have any ideas. Regards, Jenny

You could always use a black stoneware.  They are usually not cheap & they will make the rest of your glazes look different. Usually more dark & metallic.  You could also use black slip.  I use the black slip from Stone Mountain Clay.  I have brushed it & also sprayed it.  jhp

Thanks Jeff,
I'll have to look for black stoneware here in Australia.
I've tried black slip but it doesn't seem to react very well to the glazes, peels off and look like a crispy critter.

Hi Jenny, you could paint a black glaze on with a brush after removing the tape.  If you don't have a black glaze you could make one by adding black mason stain to your clear glaze.  Good luck.  Post you test and let us see what you come up with.

I did try to do the taping put the coloured glaze on and then liquid wax. Very difficult. I used a black glaze called licorice. It flowed over most of the pattern, so much so that I couldn't fiqure out which bowl it was until I referred to my notes. I will try it brushed on though and see.
Thanks for the suggestion.
