Potters & Sculptors - Making Rock from Mud
I am looking for a diamond disc to put on the potter's wheel, here in Belgium I can't find it or even in Europe . I would like to buy one in America but I don't know where I can find one.
I realized pieces and I glazed them with crystals glazes and now I would like to clean feet..
I want to thank Tom Anderson for his help in passing .
I thank you very much
Hello Josi, here is a link that might work for you, it's about 200mm in diameter
And another here:
thank you Adron Lilly, I will look these links.
See you soon
Low cost, diamond grit, flat lapping disc can be used on your potters wheel, if you, drill bat pin holes in it, and provide a trickle of water to cool it. At amazon.com, 120 grit for aggressive material removal. If you are not making large based pieces, you could make do with a 6-8 inch disc, and hold it in place with foam non-slip shelf liner. Click the image below to purchase. I also added this to the shopping links at the right column of our pages for when this discussion is off the main page.
ok thank you George I will go to see on these websites and choose which suits me
Diamond core tools were at NCECA with a broad range of diamond sanding and grinding products. Http://diamondcoretools.com. Or 619-905-9400.
George's idea works great.
Just use epoxy to glue a washer onto the center of a potter's wheel bat, then toss on one of these diamond wheels. Placing a rag between the bat and the diamond wheel helps connect them with friction.
For lubrication I bought fountain pump and drilled a hole in each side of the splash-tray adding these 90 degree elbows which drain the water into a one gallon plastic pitcher with the lid removed.

which grit do you advise to me to obtain a beautiful bottom for my jars?
120 grit is good for quickly flat lapping the foot, so a piece will sit flat on a table or counter without rocking, and for taking off rough sand or grog in the clay that will scratch tables.
220 or higher will smooth the surface to a very fine finish.
I use a rough lapping disc (120) first, then I hand sand with a 220 grit diamond sanding pad to smooth off any sharp edges that the lapping might cause where the foot turns vertical, and any projections of clay around my signature or the trimming rings on the bottom.
They are very effective for smoothing uncomfortably rough unglazed bottoms into silky smooth finishes. I spend 3-4 minutes per piece doing this.
Finally you can use 200-400 grit wet/dry silicon carbide sandpaper to smooth crystalline roughness in your matte glazes and at the rims where sand or grog makes rough spots that detract from the mouth feel of a drinking vessel. (This will take off the gloss of a glossy glaze)
Hello Josi, I don't know how polished you'd like the feet to be. I experimented with this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004MU2BXI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_...
It's for granite counter tops but I put Velcro on a bat (the disks already have velcro on the back side) and use them, does well at full speed on the wheel. To go through the full series of grits takes about 5 min but it polishes cone 6 porcelain to a mirror finish.
Thank you for your answers, I am going to try the diamond grit which georges proposes me I am a little afraid of not knowing how to use the diamond disc proposed by Adron Lilly
It is my first time when I am going to polish a pot on my wheel , thus I am going to take the simplest.
And I am going to make as Norm stuart said, I am going to stick my disk on one bat
Thank you very much josi
