Potters & Sculptors - Making Rock from Mud
So I have a recipe that calls for the above. Upon searching you come up with various answers, but the bottom line is that it is copper oxide. What I really want to know is whether it is red, black or some other color. I have both of those and also some blue copper sulphate as well as the ol' standby, copper carb. So what is it?, Buehler, buehler.....? jhp

It doesn't exist. There's no such thing as Copper (VI) Oxide. It's a typo. There's such a thing as Cu2O3 (Copper (III) oxide), but I've never actually come across it at any pottery supply store. I think it's more likely that the recipe was calling for copper carb and the C dropped out.
CuO3... yeah that would be some energetic compound. If it did exist, you probably would not want it in your studio.:-)
Keep in mind copper carbonate is not pure, but a mix of 50% CuCO3 copper carbonate and 50% Cu(OH)2 copper hydroxide.
So the amount of Black Copper Oxide CuO in each is the following:
CuO% | ||
111.18% | Red Copper Oxide - Cu2O takes on extra oxygen in the kiln
100.00% | Black Copper Oxide - CuO
71.95% | Copper Carbonate (actual 50% CuCO3 / 50% Cu(OH)2)
81.53% | Copper Hydroxide - Cu(OH)2
64.38% | Copper Carbonate - CuCO3 theoretical |
