Comment about slow cooling one fired piece and refiring with added glazes.  You will not get the same results because when you layer glazes in a one fired piece you can get more of a mixing of glazes due to absorbtion of one glaze on top of the other.  It can also be affected by how soon you apply the second glaze wet over wet or wet over dry.  Layering over a once fired piece the second glaze may not be absorbed as much and depends on if you do a hold.

Refiring a glaze at Cone 04 which has been previously fired to Cone 5/6 is merely another way to add a slow-cool and create devitrication and crystallization.

A slow-cool takes place between 1,800 F anf 1,500 F. A bisque firing to 1,888 F brings the temperature to the top of the slow-cool range and gives it additional time in the 1,800 to 1,500 F range. Adding a slow-cool to the high-fire is more energy efficient than adding a second firing.

On a different topic, every time I make a Cone 5/6 glaze I also fire a test tile to only Cone 04 and have found some of these glazes, like Powderbox Pink, are actually much better low-fire glazes.

It's also fun to reformulate a low-fire glaze to high-fire or the reverse. Sometimes I can achieve the exact same look at a different cone, while other times you can end up with a new and exciting look.

It was about  twenty years ago CM magazine had some recipes for some C5/6 glazes recipes that you refired at C04.   They were quite ugly at C5 and  quite nice at C04, they weren't bright colors but had a lot of movement and texture in them.    Denice

Denice I used Coyote Fire Brick Red for the red.  Used Coyote Firebrick Red, Coyote Shino, Coyote Red Gold, Nutmeg, and Noxema Blue.  I didn't like the results of the Fire Brick Red and Coyote Red Gold for the first firing so I fired again and used the other glazes.  Spectatcular results sometimes when you refire a bla piece.
