The book is amazing, and regarding food safety, do we have a "go to" reference to address whether glazes are safe for functional work ? ie.  Is there a list of components  and  percentages of said components that put our glazes at risk ?

you know that somewhere there is a mug / plate / bowl dying to wear some of these glazes..........

Received The Complete Guide to Mid-Range Glazes about an hour ago.

While Hesselberth and Roy's Mastering Cone 6 Glazes has been the "bible" for the cone6pots network for years, they have bowed out of republishing a new edition. This ended up being a smart move on their part, because John Britt's book is far more comprehensive. This is going to be the new "Go To" book for mid-fire potters.

One caution for cone 6 potters - - There are many glazes listed that have high probability for toxic metal leaching, and some for volatile toxic gas generation during firing. Be very careful about your selection of glazes for food and mouth contact surfaces, and always fire with good ventilation for your kiln and/or studio.

Our members are going to have a great time exploring the possibilities laid out in John's book. Please post notes and pictures of your successes and failures to deepen this pool of knowledge. I want to take this moment to both congratulate and to thank our member and pottery guru, John Britt, for his long and tireless service in expanding our knowledge of pottery making.

Lots of great glaze recipes!   John is selling signed copies at johnbrittpottery.com  or you can order it by using the link on the right to support "cone 6", our site.  Either way, looking forward to seeing folks combinations of glaze test.
