John Britt and others have touted using stick blenders to mix smaller batches of glaze. Not too effective on a 5 gallon dipping bucket full, but unbeatable for 500 ml up to a gallon or two depending on the depth in the container. The shield over the blender blades cuts down on the wild vortex that gets generated by a typical drill mixer.

Hamilton Beach 2 speed Blender

This is the one I recently purchased at Amazon. $21.85 is a great price. I purchased the John Britt DVD on glaze testing and have watched it through twice so far. As soon as my kiln and materials arrive this month I am using his teaching and the Mastering Cone 6 Glazes book to start my testing. I'll let you know once I start how this blender choice worked out. Looks pretty! Don't know how to get the picture in my post.

The immersion blender is without a doubt one of the finest tools to have for glazes. I got mine at a second-hand store for 4 dollars and recommend it highly.

It is really nice when you make a fresh batch of glaze because it chops so thoroughly that most of the time straining is almost unnecessary.
