Dry pulling....

Started this discussion. Last reply by Robert Coyle Sep 16, 2015. 2 Replies

I am just wondering if other potters do dry pulling?  I know when potters are making big stuff, they'll pull and then use a blow torch to firm it up and then pull it more, or add clay and pull, but…Continue

S-type thermo couple

So between the house building and moving and 2 open heart surgeries, I have not been involved in pottery for awhile.  All my kilns are stacked up in the 3rd car garage and I;m just waiting for spring and the OK from my cardiologist to get back into the swing of things.  In the meantime, I have several automatic searches on e-Bay and one day it came up with this Type S TC for all of $18.88!  Of course I had to buy one but with no way to test it, I have held off buying any more of them.  Is there…See More

'phew, glad that's done.....

Posted on March 8, 2016 at 10:11am 2 Comments

So my buddy & I just finished the last of these urns.  They are for a certain building over in Fort Collins, Colorado. They ordered 10 of them total.  We ended up making 19 total when all was said and done & delivered. We had breakage issues and a few glaze issues that we had to work through. In the beginning I was helping throw sections, but in the end I just helped get the clay wedged and took the torch to the sections and then I fired them & glazed them.  Just glad it's all…

My new LLutt Kiln

Posted on November 4, 2014 at 12:36pm 1 Comment

A few years back I had bought this used Skutt KM 818.  It was in decent shape when I bought it but after changing the elements a few times, I started to have to use way too many element pins and the bottom & sides had had a few mishaps, so when I found this L&L J18 on our local wants ads, I snagged it up.  The only place this kiln looked worn is on the top, the inside was pristine!!!  So, I took the controller & S-TC out of the Skutt, took the manual controls off the L&L and…

Hi Denice

I did a search and it went right to their new website. It said I had to reset my account since it was a new website. We built a new house a couple of years ago and all my pottery stuff is in storage. While doing the landscaping I suffered an aortic dissection. It’s a miracle I’m alive.  I’ve had 2 open heart surgeries but this next year I will be getting my stuff out and my studio rebuilt. I’m having to take it slow but it will happen. I so want to throw again and do some glazing!  Jeff

Hi Jeff, this is Denice E. Demuth  I was wondering if you have tried to get on Ceramics Monthly Forum lately,  My computer won't let me, it claims that Ceramics Monthly has a virus. I was just wondering if it was Ceramics Monthly or my computer.  I noticed a old post I sent to you Feb 2014, I was telling you how I was cleaning and putting a mural in the drying cabinet.  This week I am installing brick like tiles that have kiln cast glass medallions as a flower pattern set in them.  I am not sure if it is a grill or a mural. I taught myself glass casting using recycled glass.  Each glass medallion looks like the bottom of a old wine or beer bottle.  I had to throw, bisque and seal each mold and then break the molds off to get the glass out. Each glass firing took 18 hours,  I had to stay with the kiln the every time,  none of my kilns are programmable.  I am getting ready to start on another mural,  I wanted to do something fun but they want a landscape. I am thinking of making it with different clay's but I need to do some testing first. I just finished firing another tile project that is made with three different clay's it will be installed in a few months. Let me know what you are working on and if you have heard anything on the Ceramics Monthly problems.    Denice

Jeff I'll try to dig that up next week,  I am cleaning up a 5'x6' mural and putting it in drying cabinets and I'm running out of room.  My studio is a mess but I'm going to clean it up as soon as I get all of the parts and pieces put away to dry.  I still have a lot of glaze testing to do for the mural and 50 pieces of molding to go around the edge to make I'll do that after I clean.  If you decide to make the glaze wear gloves and mask, I have had people look at the recipe and said they wouldn't make it because it was so toxic. So be careful, I went to college when you didn't wear masks or gloves they just told you not to eat lunch in the glaze mixing room.  Denice

Well, the mail has gotten a lot better over the years. What used to take two weeks to get here, now takes 3-4 days. Larger items like a kiln, or a large order of clay would have to come by boat - about 2-3 weeks. But I like it here... I must, I've been here 21 years now. Now I'm teaching ceramics at a local high school. If I could just get them to fund the classes... maybe next year.
