The grinding head is a diamond-encrusted metal plate, about $30.

The way it's supposed to work is the ceramic wears down the metal the diamond is embedded into, exposing new diamond as the diamond chunks wear away = but they last for years.

If you don't cool the diamond wheel with water, the metal melts and covers over the diamond  making it dull and liable to cracks.  So you always need to apply water when grinding.

Hi Norman,

I am planning on making a fine grinding wheel for pot bottoms such as you have set up here. What type of paper do you have on the wheel head?
